Glycobiology encompasses the study of the complex sugars found attached to proteins and cell membranes as well as the receptors that recognise them. One focus within this theme is structural characterisation of such glycans, using mass spectrometry as a primary tool. A simplified and broad classification is presented, especially emphasizing the roles of organism-intrinsic and organism-extrinsic glycan-binding proteins in recognizing glycans. There is some overlap between the categories, e.g., some structural properties involve specific recognition of glycans.

The journal seeks to publish articles that provide novel information about the biological significance of glycans or glycosylation. Shorter Communications are also published providing timely findings that will have a significant impact for investigators in the field. Simple and complex carbohydrates (glycans) have long been known to play major metabolic, structural and physical roles in biological systems.

About this Research Topic Glycobiology is one of the fastest growing field in the natural sciences and is widely relevant to many areas of basic research, biomedicine and biotechnology. Glycobiology began with the discovery of sphingolipids, sphingomyelin and sphingosine by Dr. J. L. W. Thudichum in the late 19th century. Glycans have recently taken center stage in many areas of biomedical and life sciences, ranging from research on cancer, mammalian development and physiology to studies of plants, bacteria and viruses.

"Synthetic glycolipid-like constructs as tools for glycobiology research, diagnostics, and as potential therapeutics". Glycomics is defined as the scientific pursuit of the collection of carbohydrates found in the extracellular matrix, intracellularly, and associated with the cell membrane. Glycobiology is an emerging field that studies glycomics. Carbohydrates and Binding Proteins. Glycobiology-related Enzymes. Proteoglycans. Defined in the narrowest sense, glycobiology is the study of the structure, biosynthesis, and biology of saccharides that are widely distributed in nature.
